Fantasy Picks: Who to pick and Who not to pick for the Las Vegas Motor Speedway 2015 Kobalt Tools 400

The third race of the 2015 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series will take place Sunday in Las Vegas, Nevada at the Las Vegas Motor Speedway. The Las Vegas Motor Speedway is 1.5-mile oval that is located just a few miles from the iconic strip, and it is no wonder why it has become a fan favorite among race fans and drivers.

The 18th annual NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race at the Las Vegas Motor Speedway is expected to take place with sunny skies and packed grandstands.

Who to Pick

Jimmie Johnson

The odds on favorite when it comes to the Las Vegas Motor Speedway is the No. 48 Hendrick Motorsports Chevrolet driven by Jimmie Johnson as in thirteen career Vegas races he has hoisted the trophy four times, finished in the top-ten eight times and has only finished outside the top-twenty on two occasions.

He is one of the few drivers to boast a career finishing average in the top-ten at the Las Vegas Motor Speedway and has produced finishes of 6th, 6th and 2nd in his last three races at the 1.5-mile oval.

Carl Edwards

Carl Edwards has yet to bring home a top-ten finish for his new Joe Gibbs Racing team this season thus far but the odds would be in his favor to do so this weekend in Nevada as he has two wins, five top-fives, six top-tens and he has only finished outside the top-twenty once in his Las Vegas Motor Speedway career.

Carl Edwards No. 19 Toyota showed good speed last weekend in Atlanta but look for it to produce some better results come Sunday in Vegas.

Martin Truex Jr.

Martin Truex Jr. has kicked off the 2015 season in surprising fashion with finishes of eighth and sixth in the first two Sprint Cup Series races of the year. Look for the good luck to follow Truex into sin city Sunday as in nine Vegas races he has accumulated eight top-twenty finishes.

Truex only has two career top-ten finishes at the Las Vegas Motor Speedway but the way his No. 78 Furniture Row Chevy has been competitively running so far this season, and how he has consistently ran in the front half of the field over his career in Vegas it sure looks like Truex is a good choice for this year’s Kobalt Tools 400.

Matt Kenseth

Matt Kenseth enters the race weekend with a finishing average of eleventh at the Las Vegas Motor Speedway as he has produced six top-fives, eight top-tens and a consistent thirteen top-twenty finishes in fifteen races at the speedway. Kenseth may not have a victory in well over a year but look for the Joe Gibbs Racing driver to keep your fantasy team in the hunt this weekend with a very strong finish.

Who Not To Pick

Denny Hamlin

Denny Hamlin has had a up and down start to his 2015 season and look for the latter to continue this weekend in the Kobalt Tools 400 because in nine Las Vegas Sprint Cup Series race the driver of the No. 11 Toyota for Joe Gibbs Racing only has one top-five finish and four top-ten finishes.

Hamlin has finished twelve, fifteenth and twentieth in the last three Vegas races.

Ryan Newman

I would go against picking the Richard Childresss Racing driver this weekend because he has finished outside the top-twenty in five of his fourteen races at the Las Vegas Motor Speedway and he has only brought home a top-ten finish in half of those fourteen races.

Clint Bowyer

Lady Luck has not be on Bowyer’s side at the Las Vegas Motor Speedway in his NASCAR Sprint Cup Series career as in nine Vegas races he only has one top-five and three top-ten finishes to show for. Plus, he has finished 23rd and 27th in the last two Las Vegas Motor Speedway Sprint Cup Series races.

Joey Logano

Joey Logano looks like a championship contender after the first two races of the season but Logano has only one top-five and two top-ten finishes in his six-race career at the Las Vegas Motor Speedway. Logano has the equipment and the talent to produce a strong finish come Sunday in the Kobalt Tools 400 but he is just a tad bit of a risky pick considering his stats at the 1.5-mile oval. I would save Logano for another time.
