Carl Edwards had enough fuel and was able to hold off Jimmie Johnson on the final restart in his Subway Roush Fenway Racing Ford to win the 9th annual Subway Fresh Fit 500 from the Phoenix International Raceway in Avondale, Arizona on a warm, mostly cloudy Sunday afternoon.
Jimmie Johnson finished second, Denny Hamlin third, defending champion Brad Keselowski finished fourth and Dale Earnhardt Jr. rounded out the top-five after 316-laps in the Valley of the Sun.
The win was Edwards’ 20th victory in 303 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series races, and he broke a 70-race winless streak, which was the longest of his career.
Edwards, 33, has now won at the Phoenix International Raceway two times and has finished in the top-ten eleven times in eighteen career races at PIR.
Edwards led a race high 122 laps on his way to the victory.
There were a total of eight cautions for 43 laps Sunday at the 1.0-mile Phoenix International Raceway.
It took roughly three hours and fifteen seconds to complete Sunday’s Subway Fresh Fit 500 race.
Jimmie Johnson leads the points standings by 8 points over Dale Earnhardt Jr. as we head to the third race of the 2013 season at the 1.5-mile Las Vegas Motor Speedway.
