Why NASCAR Should Never Have Mandatory Cautions or Race Stoppages

Speedway Motorsports Inc. chairman Bruton Smith said NASCAR needs to implement mandatory cautions, or race stoppages, to bring more excitement to the races. This would just kill the sport of NASCAR if that would happen.

If NASCAR would put race stoppages into races this sport would turn into the NHL, do we want two intermissions of 20 minutes every 75 laps so the fans and all of us can just twiddle our fingers while we wait for the racing to begin? I’m not a fan of hockey but I do pull for the Anaheim Ducks because I’m a local, I do not watch most games but I occasionally go to some of the games over the course of the long season and the one downfall of the NHL is the big intermissions in between periods, with these intermissions the games become very long and almost unwatchable which if NASCAR tried to do this it would be the same way. I have a feeling people would just tune out at an intermission because people would become uninterested.

Should we go out and put in a halftime show too? At the halfway point we should have a marching band march up and down the frontstretch and have dancers dance to the tune of the music because that would make these races a lot better. The only thing that wins if NASCAR implemented these stoppages would be the tracks because people will buy more food and drinks because they have absolutely nothing to do for those 20 minutes, Bruton is a track owner so he would make even more money.

“If we’re in show business, let’s deliver that show,” Smith said last weekend. “Right now, we’re not delivering it. … Call it what you want, but you’ve got to have caution flags. That creates excitement. You can’t just sit there with nothing happening. It ruins the event. It’s damaging to our sport.”

It says right in Smith’s comment that sitting here having nothing happening ruins the event, so what would intermissions do? Maybe he should change the layout or bank his Kentucky Speedway and try to make the racing at his own tracks better before he comes out and opens his mouth, Kentucky Speedway is owned by Bruton Smith and even with having cautions the racing at that track completely blows.

This would kill the whole point of Auto Racing, you have to let races play out.

Having mandatory cautions or stoppages would kill any type of strategy teams may have and just turn these races into big laughable jokes in the end.
